Failing the Teacher

Have you ever reviewed your kids math? Most parents may be scared away because it has been years since they looked at a math text book. They may not have been very good at algebra in the first place. I’m not in that position. I have an engineering degree. I took almost as many math courses as I did engineering courses.

Michelle Malkin (LINK) sent out a warning months back about a text book that many schools are using. Everyday Math teaches your kids in very strange ways.

My son then came home with this horrible book this year. Many of the questions are absurd. At one point, he needed help with an algebra problem. The problem is, he has no knowledge of algrebra. He was in 5th grade. We contacted the teacher and she told us that he was to use trial and error to figure out the answer.

Trial and error is not math!

USA Today has an article on our teachers. (LINK)

American education schools set exceedingly low expectations for the mathematics knowledge that aspiring teachers must demonstrate

There are many statistics that point to the overall low standards for teachers and math is the bottom of the shallow barrel. Can teachers be excited about teaching a subject that they barely grasp?

It is no wonder that test grades are falling and American companies are begging for more H-1B Visas.
