Opting out of Social Security

Rasmussen Reports says that 46% of U.S. voters should be allowed to opt out of social security while 38% are opposed (LINK). Nearly 60% of voters under the age of 40 support an opt-out plan. The report points out that this plan is unlikely to go anywhere with Democrats in control.

This is a position that Republican should embrace. The proposal could have reduced payments to social security therefore keeping the funding for the people already dependent on Social Security. Tax rules could be setup like 401K plans as an incentive to keep people who opt out from spending their retirement money now.

This issue is going to get more attention as the problem grows…which it will. Like drilling for domestic oil, Republicans should continue to take stands on issues that the public supports and are consistant with conservative values.
