It reminds me of my first job after college. I took a job as a carpenter at a rate that was below the going rate. I needed a job. My new boss gave me the job of digging holes for for deck posts. My parents used to tell me that I would end up digging ditches if I didn’t go to college. I ended up digging them any way, and I didn’t think if it as demeaning.

My boss watched from afar. Not only did I get my job done, but I helped a co-worker who was in over his head.  I busted my ass to get my holes done and then I showed my co-worker how to build a straight deck railing.

At the end of the first day, I got a raise. In three months, I was the foreman.

You have to get on the first rung before you can climb the latter.
