2011 December

Here is someone running for president who promises to cut the deficit and implement a pay-as-you-go plan…and he is not running as a Republican.

Snort…I believe Obama lied and American believed him. The only spending Obama wants to cut is defense spending.

The Obama administration is trying to make hay out of the polls that show a dismal approval rating of Congress. Is he making a mistake? Think about this. Conservatives don’t like big government. The never have.  Liberals like big government and expect Congress to do big things. So when the Congressional approval falls, it is likely because liberals are disenchanted.

So the Obama strategy to run against Congress is simply a way to get his base back on-board the big government gravy train. Liberals will vote for him anyway. He needs moderates…and moderates like politicians to play nice together.

Running against Congress might have worked for Harry Truman…but Barack Obama is no Harry Truman.

Barney Frank is quoted in The Hill as saying

(Newt Gingrich) would be the best thing to happen to Democrats since Barry Goldwater (link)

Take Newt Gingrich out of the equation. Democrats may have benefited from Barry Goldwater, but the country sure didn’t. We got Lyndon Johnson instead. His time as president was horrible. He escalated the Vietnam War. Riots broke out around the country. Leaders were being assassinated (RFK, MLK).  The stock market went into a stall that took over 15 years to get going again. The DOW Jones Industrial Average was 902 on Jan 4th, 1965. It was 888 on Jan 4th 1982. By my measure, LBJ was horrible for the country.

So what is good for Democrats is bad for the rest of us.

CNN explains that the U.S. is now exporting a record amount of gasoline. The reason: We ain’t using it. CNN explains it is largely due to the slower economy but also attributes  1) hybrids and 2) ethanol. I expect that ethanol’s effect on the market is minimal.
