Politicians have been saying for years that Washington needs to be less polarized, but Washington has become a reflection of the country. Washington is more polarized because the people are more polarized.

In June of 2009, Gallup released a poll showing that “Conservatives” are the largest ideological group. Conservatives jumped on this to downplay the views of liberals, but this is a mistake. If you look at the chart below, the long term trend shows that Liberalism has grown as well. The group that has declined is self proclaimed Moderates.

I think this is a good thing. Moderates muddy the water. Their influence keeps politicians from telling the truth about their positions. Barack Obama is for  single payers health care system. He won’t tell you that now, but he did when only liberals were watching. Now that the spot light is on him, he tells you something different. The president’s real policy goals are masked for fear of alienating the moderates.

I want the truth. I want a real debate. Barack Obama believes in socialized medicine. Let’s stop with the phony moderate rhetoric and talk about the free market versus socialism. In the end, that is what this debate is really about.
