I have a radical proposal. Move Election day to the first Tuesday in March. No…this isn’t an evil Republican plan to extend President Bush’s term.

Americans have short memories. Do you remember how much you paid in taxes this year? I bet you remember how much of a refund you got…but do you remember how much you paid in total?

If the election was smack-dab in the middle of tax season, that number would be fresh in your mind. Plus, it would have the added benefit of keeping accountants and tax lawyers out of political activism. They would be too busy doing their jobs.

Moving election day to the middle of tax season might give us a fighting chance of making a tax code that makes sense.
